Raid De Himalaya 2018: Two amputees to compete on motor-bikes

Ashok Munne and Vinod Rawat will be competing in the toughest category of the Raid, Xtreme Moto.

Two amputees, Ashok Munne of Nagpur and Vinod Rawat of Mumbai, will compete on motorbikes in the world’s highest cross-country rally, the Raid de Himalaya, to be staged from October 8 to 14.

Considered among the top-10 toughest rallies of the world, the Raid, taking off from Leh will feature about 200 competitors, racing over some of the most challenging roads in the Kargil, Zanskar and Ladakh sectors, speeding over rocks, gravel and dust.

Ashok Munne and Vinod Rawat will be competing in the toughest category of the Raid, Xtreme Moto. The 34-year-old Munne is a para-athlete, mountaineer, an expert paraglider, a scuba diver, a marathon runner, a black belt in martial arts, a skilled gymnast and kayaker, yoga expert and ace swimmer.

The 43-year-old Vinod Rawat has lived the dream of Raid de Himalaya for the past 18 years. He has been going to Leh since 2011 at least once a year, riding the motorcycle to get acclimatised to the demands of high altitude.
