Justin Rose carded a flawless six-under-par 66 to top the leaderboard at the Dell Technologies Championship on Friday.

Justin Rose set the early pace at the Dell Technologies Championship as the world number four earned a one-stroke lead at the second FedEx Cup play-off event.

Rose made a great start in Boston, where the Englishman carded a flawless six-under-par 66 to top the leaderboard on Friday.

The nine-time PGA Tour champion is no stranger to the FedEx Cup, having won the 2012 BMW Championship and he was in fine form at TPC Boston.

Rose made six birdies without dropping a shot to lead Scotland's Russell Knox and Mexican Abraham Ancer heading into Saturday's second round. As well as Rose played, the rest of the field is not far behind as 15 players sit within two shots of the lead.

Gary Woodland, Keegan Bradley, Beau Hossler and Chris Kirk are all two strokes off the pace. World number one and FedEx Cup hopeful Dustin Johnson is a shot further back following his opening-round 68.

Johnson was leapfrogged by Northern Trust champion Bryson DeChambeau atop the FedEx Cup standings last week as the field was cut from 125 to 100 for the Dell Technologies Championship.

But Johnson appears on track to reclaim the lead thanks to six birdies and three bogeys on Friday.

Adam Hadwin, Xander Schauffele, Marc Leishman, Webb Simpson, James Hahn, Rafa Cabrera Bello and Brian Harman are also three under alongside Johnson.

Jordan Spieth – the 2015 FedEx Cup champion – carded a two-under-par 69 to be tied for 16th with three-time major winner Brooks Koepka, who is fifth in the standings.

Tony Finau – fourth in the rankings – is also four shots adrift of Rose, while FedEx Cup leader DeChambeau posted a 70 to be a shot further back.

Four-time major winner Rory McIlroy, who missed The Northern Trust, is even par and a stroke ahead of Tiger Woods.

Woods felt good with his new putter but did not see results on the course as he holed four bogeys and three birdies in the opening round.
