Cherchesov to remain Russian head coach

Russia head coach Stanislav Cherchesov will maintain his position, Russian Football Union First Vice-President, Nikita Simonyan, said.

Russia head coach Stanislav Cherchesov will maintain his position, Russian Football Union First Vice-President, Nikita Simonyan, said on Wednesday.

Russia beat Spain in its round of 16 match and made it into the quarterfinals, where it lost to Croatia 3-4 via a penalty shootout, reports Tass news agency.

“Cherchesov will surely continue working (with the team). When will a new contract be signed? This is a question for Alayev (the acting president of the RFU),” Simonyan said.

Cherchesov took the helm of the Russian national football team in August 2016. His current contract will expire in August 2018.
