Manjrekar named in ICC's umpire selection panel

Sanjay Manjrekar has been one of the prominent faces of Indian cricket, and now, he is gearing up for a new role.

The former India batsman, who is now a popular television commentator, has been named in the International Cricket Council (ICC)’s Umpire Selection Panel.

In the just concluded ICC meeting in Singapore, the ICC Board approved the composition of the four-member committee. The panel comprising ICC’s General Manager-Cricket, Geoff Allardice, former Sri Lanka cricketer and ICC chief referee, Ranjan Madugalle, former Australia cricketer and ICC referee, David Boon, and Manjrekar, will look after the selection of international umpires for the next couple of years.

Boon, and Madugalle have been in the referee panel for long, and this will be a new responsibility for the two former international cricketers.

It has been learnt that Manjrekar was approached by the world body a few weeks back and he gave his consent soon to be a part of the committee.

Now a full-time commentator, Manjrekar is presently busy with the ODI series between India and the Windies. 

The 53-year-old featured in 37 Tests and 74 ODIs for India from 1987 to 1996.
