Ravindra Jadeja was all praise for Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma, both of whom scored centuries to help India post a facile victory over West Indies in the first One-Day International (ODI) here on Sunday.

REPORT: Kohli, Rohit raze Windies

“Virat and Rohit batted very well. They played proper cricketing shots, and didn’t take any chances. They played according to the situation. It is very tough to bowl to them when they are set. They can play shots to every part of the ground. The pitch was also good to bat on — it didn’t turn much for the spinners, nor was there much pace on offer for the fast bowlers,” Jadeja said.

Jadeja, who took two for 66 with his left-arm spin, stated that it was best to keep things simple with the ball. “I was trying to keep the ball on the stumps, and restrict the batsmen by bowling in good areas. The key was to not give them any width,” he said.

In pursuit of wickets

West Indies captain Jason Holder conceded that his team fell 30-40 runs short. “We came up against two quality, world-class players in Rohit and Kohli. We had to get them out — that’s the only way we could stop them. We probably conceded too many boundaries, but we went looking for wickets, since that’s the only way to win the game. I told our bowlers that it would not be wise to come out and contain, as we were 30-40 runs short. Hopefully, in the next game, we can take early wickets and get into the middle-order quicker,” Holder said.
