Priyanshu Moliya has caught the attention of the cricket world with an unbeaten 556 in the DK Gaekwad (under-14) tournament held recently in Baroda. For a 14-year-old, it was indeed a gigantic effort.

Priyanshu, who batted 319 balls and hit 98 fours and one six, is a trainee at the Mohinder Lala Amarnath Cricket Academy and was playing against Yogi Cricket Academy at the Vadodara Cricket Academy ground.

Mohinder, one of the finest batsmen the game has seen, was all praise for the youngster. “He was in Rajkot and moved to Baroda in search of better cricket facilities. I was happy to offer him the stage to train because I was convinced he had tremendous potential. For his age, Priyanshu is very focused and disciplined. He picks up his lessons very well. To me, this ability to grasp things quickly is his biggest strength. He is a great competitor,” Mohinder told Sportstar.

The fact that he can bowl off-spin too makes him a gifted cricketer. “I make him play with senior boys and I am sure he will get better with practice. I rarely train him with the under-14 boys. I have planned special drills for him. For his age, Priyanshu plays the pull and cut effortlessly. He is a compact cricketer and stands out. He is amazing,” Mohinder added.

According to Mohinder, the kid is a natural athlete. “He is good at studies too. I am going to get him to play in Mumbai regularly.”

Mohinder also pointed out that he hit only one six during the big innings. “He avoids playing in the air and has great ball sense.”

Priyanshu's father, Suresh, credited Mohinder for his son's progress.

“I have a small construction business in Rajkot. When Priyanshu was eight, I had made a video of his batting and shown it to (former Test players) Karsan Ghavri and Yajurvindra Singh. They asked me to get the boy to Mumbai. It was not possible, but I brought him to Baroda on coach Anil Thakral’s advice.

"We are grateful to Mohinder Sir, who provides all his equipment gives special attention. Priyanshu was 11 when I came to Baroda and I don’t think it was a bad decision. It is tough on the child but it has made him stronger,” said Suresh.

Mohinder concluded, “I see a future star in this boy. He needs support.”
