Asian Games, Day 14: Amit Panghal, Bridge team clinch gold medals

Amit Panghal displayed grit to stun the reigning Olympic champion for India’s only boxing gold as India achieved its best ever medal haul at the Asian Games.

Key highlights from Day 14 action at the 18th Asian Games in Jakarta.

 

8.30pm: With that, India's participation in the Asian Games 2018 comes to an end. India has matched its best ever gold medal tally (15, on par with the 1951 New Delhi Games) and has bagged a record number of medals in total (69) in Jakartka-Palembang. 8.26pm: (DIVING): The 10m Platform final is done and Siddharth Bajrang finishes 9th. India doesn't add to it's medal tally here.

820pm: (HOCKEY): Japan played Malaysia in the men's final just now and it was a remarkable match. Japan, at one point, was 2-5 down but it came back to make it 6-6 in regulation time before winning the game 3-1 in a penalty shootout. It bags the gold medal! That was an incredible game.

7.25pm: (DIVING): Siddharth Bajrang, the last Indian left in the Asian Games, is in action in the men’s 10m Platform final.

3:03pm: (SQUASH) Joshna Chinappa, Dipika Pallikal, Sunayna Sara and Tanvi Khanna settle for silver in the women's squash team final as they go down 2-0 to Hong Kong. This is the second time Hong Kong's defeating India in the tournament.

2:22pm: (SQUASH): India loses the first match against Hong Kong in the women's team final. Sunayna Kuruvilla loses 1-3 to Ho Tze Lok. Now it's up to Dipika Pallikal and Joshna Chinappa.

2:06pm: (SQUASH): Joshna Chinappa comes up against a familiar foe in Annie Au Wing Chi. Joshna had lost her match against Annie in the group stage tie. But Joshna comes into this fixture on the back of a win against eight-time world champion Nicol David, so that must give her a lot of confidence. 2:00pm: (SQUASH): India women's squash team is action against Hong Kong in the gold medal match, vying for another gold for India on the day. India had lost the last group match to Hong Kong 2-0.

1:25pm: (BOXING): What a moment for Amit Panghal! After an Asian Amateur Championship bronze and Commonwealth silver, he pulls off an Asian Games victory against the Olympic Champion who had run through his opponents in Rio. Sharp, fast and powerful on the day, was Amit. The 22-year-old is just starting.  ( This was how the match went )

1:10pm: (BRIDGE): ANOTHER GOLD FOR INDIA! Pranab Bardhan and Shibnath Sarkar win gold in the men's pair event, taking India's gold medal tally to 15, its joint best at the Asian Games. ( Report )

12:43pm: (BOXING): GOLD! AMIT PANGHAL STRIKES GOLD! Amit defeats Rio Olympic Champion Hasanboy Dusmatov to clinch India's 14th gold medal in the 2018 Asian Games.

 

12:40pm: (BOXING): Amit has the upper-hand in the final round. It'll be a huge deal if he pulls it off here.

12:34pm: (BOXING): The first round was intense from the go. Amit Panghal looking very sharp, ducking punches and trying to land a few himself. It's not easy against the moghty Dusmatov though.

12:15pm: (BOXING): Amit Panghal will be seen in action soon in the men's Lightweight Fly 49kg category final against Uzbekistan's Hasanboy Dusmatov.

11:15am: The Asian Games may still be on, but Indian shooting has moved on to Korea for the World Championship, after winning an impressive nine medals, including two gold and four silver in Palembang. 10:30am: We have a champion here! Asian Games bronze medalist Seema Punia had decided to donate her entire pocket money of $700 and an additional ₹1 lakh to help the flood-affected people of Kerala.

10:10am: (KAYAK): India finishes last in the women's Kayak Four (K4) 500m final. China takes the gold, Kazakhstan claims the silver and Uzbekistan bags the bronze.

10:00am: India will be playing Hong Kong for the gold today, and a victory would be the women’s first at the Asiad, but just the thought of the opponent made Joshna Chinnapa shudder. It stirred up fresh wounds for the country’s top player. Stan Rayan with more details from Jakarta.

8:30am: (JUDO): India's Judo campaign comes to an end as the side suffers a 4-0 loss to Uzbekistan in the quarterfinal.

8:10am: (KAYAK): The Indian quartet of Ragina Kiro, Sandhya Kispotta, Sonia Devi Phairembam and Meena Devi Laishram will be in action soon in the women's Kayak Four (K4) 500m final.

8:00am: (CANOE): The Indian team of Prakant Sharma and Jamesboy Singh finish last in the men's canoe double (C2) 200m final.

7:45am: (JUDO):
The Indian team defeats Nepal 4-1 to cruise into the quarterfinal of the mixed team event. Vijay Kumar, Harshdeep Singh, Kalpana Devi, (fourth Indian winner not specified) registered wins, while Garima Choudhary was the only Indian to lose her bout. India will now meet Kazakhstan in the quarterfinal, which is scheduled to begin at 8:40am IST.

All eyes will be on the women's squash team today when the team of Joshana Chinappa, Dipika Pallikal Karthik, Sunayna Kuruvilla and Tanvi Khanna takes on Hong Kong for a shot at gold. The Indian team comes into the tie on a high after defeating defending champion and top seed Malaysia 2-0 on Friday. 

The other gold medal up for grabs is in the men's Lightweight Fly 49kg category where Amit Phangal will take on Uzbekistan's Hasanboy Dusmatov.

The Indian men's hockey team will face a stiff fight for the bronze medal when it faces Pakistan in the bronze medal match at 4:30 this evening.
