Deepika Kumari’s campaign at the first stage of Archery World Cup ended in the quarterfinals.

It was a disappointing day for Indians at the Archery World Cup (Stage I) in Shanghai as Atanu Das and Deepika Kumari lost their quarterfinal matches in the men’s and women’s recurve categories, respectively.

Atanu Das defeated Erdal Meric Dal 6-2 in the third round and went on to blank Patrick Huston 6-0 in the fourth round but fell prey to Steve Wijler in the quarterfinal. In a very closely contested match, Wijler held his nerve to reach the semifinals after defeating Das 6-5. Wijler went on to reach the final. India’s Viswash lost 5-6 to Furukawa Takaharu in the third round.

Fifth seeded Deepika Kumari defeated Preeti 6-0 in the third round and then beat Japan’s Sugimoto Tomomi 7-3 to reach the quarterfinal, where she lost 1-7 to Hayakawa Ren of Japan.

Indians failed to register a single win in the compound category on Friday. While Jyothi Vennam and Divya Dhayal lost their respective third round matches in the women’s category, Chinna Raju Srither, Gurwinder Singh and Abhishek Verma stumbled in the men’s event.

India will now bank on the men’s compound team to land a gold on Saturday. The Indian team comprising Abhishek Verma, Chinna Raj Srither and Amanjeet Singh will take on the Columbia’s Jose Carlos Ospina, Daniel Munoz and Camilo Andres Cardona in the final.

Jyothi Vennam and Abhishek Verma will face the fourth seed pair of Jamie Natta and Reo Wilde in the compound mixed team bronze medal play-off tomorrow.
