Asia Oceania World Junior: India outwits Korea for fifth spot

Nishant Dabas won both his singles and doubles to outwit Korea 2-1 for the fifth place in the Asia Oceania World Junior under-14 tennis tournament in Bangkok on Saturday.

It was a narrow miss for the Indian team, as the top four teams China, Japan, Australia and Thailand qualified for the World Group final to be staged in Prostejov, Czech Republic in August.

India had lost to Australia in the quarterfinal, after finishing second in the group following a 1-2 loss to Korea in the last league match.

The results (final): China bt Japan 2-0 (Zheng Boren bt Kokoro Isomura 7-6(5), 6-1; Wang Xiao Fei bt Shintaro Mochizuki 6-3, 6-3).

Third place: Australia bt Thailand 3-0 (Casey Hoole bt Guantinun Sootinun-Opart 6-3, 7-5; Philip Sekulic bt Tanapatt Nirundorn 6-4, 6-1; Casey Hoole & Edward Vo bt Tanapatt Nirundorn & Shisanuphong Pokinsagethasiri 1-6, 6-3, 10-5).

Fifth place: India bt Korea 2-1 (NIshant Dabas bt Song Woodan 4-6, 6-4, 7-5; Divesh Gahlot lost to Jeon Jewon 6-7(7), 3-6; Nishant Dabas & V. M. Sandeep bt Song Woodan & Yoon Hyeondeok 6-1, 3-6, 10-8).

The final placings: 1. China, 2. Japan, 3. Australia, 4. Thailand, 5. India, 6. Korea, 7. Chinese Taipei, 8. Syria, 9. New Zealand, 10. Hong Kong, 11. Indonesia, 12. Lebanon, 13. Uzbekistan, 14. Kazakhstan, 15. Sri Lanka, 16. Philippines.
