Rugby: Indian women win silver at Laos

Playing in the round-robin league at the Chaoanuvong stadium, the Indian women won five out of six matches to finish behind South Korea (18 points) with 16 points. Malaysia bagged the third place (14 points) in the seven-nation event.

The India women’s team won the silver medal in the 2017 Asian Rugby Sevens Trophy at Laos. Playing in the round-robin league at the Chaoanuvong stadium, the side won five out of six matches to finish behind South Korea (18 points) with 16 points. Malaysia bagged the third place (14 points) in the seven-nation event.

South Korea’s Minhui Lee was the best player overall, followed by Normasyirah Zahari (Malaysia), Bohee Seo (SK), Fidelia Telajan (Mal) in that order till fourth, as per Asian Rugby statistics. India’s Hupi Majhi was fifth overall and among the top three Try Scorers. Merrarani Hembram was the third in Conversion and ninth overall.

Captained by Neha Pardeshi, India defeated Laos 22-7, Philippines 12-5, Nepal 43-0, Malaysia 26-12, Pakistan 5-0 and lost the concluding league tie to South Korea. The latter won 29-0 and remained the only unbeaten side. India was coached by Nasser Hussain and assisted by Rehmuddin Shaikh. The team participated under the aegis of Indian Rugby Football Union, also called Rugby India, and was supported by Societe Generale.
