The week gone by was another eventful one in the world of sports. From cricket to football to badminton, the world witnessed many a thrilling moment, some heartwarming and some heartbreaking, and here is Sportstar 's weekly round-up.
CRICKET
Dinesh Karthik's phenomenal shot-making ability came to India's rescue and helped lift Nidahas Trophy by beating Bangladesh by four wickets. Karthik's eight-ball 29 (2x4, 3x6) single-handedly dragged India over the line having looked like it might fall short of the target (167) with two overs left to play. ( REPORT )
Kagiso Rabada bowled an incisive spell of fast bowling on the fourth morning of the second Test — he took six for 54 in the second innings and finished with a match haul of 11 for 150 — to drive South Africa to a series-levelling win by six wickets at St. George's Park in Port Elizabeth. ( REPORT )
Rabada was, however, unable to avoid being handed a two-Test ban for a shoulder contact with Steven Smith in celebration of the Australian captain's wicket. Rabada received three demerit points for an ICC Level-2 offence. ( Full story )
Nepal gained temporary ODI status until 2022 by beating Papua New Guinea (PNG) in the ICC World Cup Qualifiers on Thursday (March 15). ( REPORT )
Mitchell Santner was left out of the New Zealand Test squad for the upcoming home Test series against England because of a knee injury. He will also miss the eleventh edition of the IPL, having been bought by Chennai Super Kings. ( REPORT )
FOOTBALL
Chennaiyin FC bagged its second Indian Super League title by beating Bengaluru FC 3-2 in the final at the Kanteerava Stadium. ( REPORT )
The 2017-18 Champions League round of 16 witnessed an upset in the form of Manchester United being knocked out by Sevilla , by 2-1 on aggregate. Elsewhere, Chelsea was beaten 4-1 on aggregate by Barcelona, while Roma and Bayern Munich also progressed to the quarterfinal stage of this competition.
At the weekend, Liverpool posted a crushing 5-0 Premier League victory over Watford at home, courtesy a four-goal show from its player of the year Mohamed Salah.
Tottenham Hotspur ( 3-0 ), Manchester United ( 2-0 ) posted routine wins in their respective FA Cup quarterfinal ties against Swansea City and Brighton and Hove Albion.
Chelsea reached the semifinals by beating Liecester 2-1 after extra time, Pedro Rodriguez producing the winner in the first half of extra time.
The West London club was drawn against Southampton, while Manchester United and Tottenham will face off in the FA Cup semifinals.
Elsewhere in Europe, Juventus won one and drew another of its Serie A fixtures, while Barcelona comfortably beat Athletic Bilbao (2-0) at Camp Nou.
Bayern Munich was beaten 2-1 by RB Leipzig, thanks to goals from Naby Keita and Timo Werner.
Mumbai City FC beat Indian Arrows in extra time in a AIFF Super Cup qualification match on Friday (March 16), while ATK put four past Chennai City FC .
TENNIS
Juan Martin del Potro beat Milos Raonic in straight sets (6-2, 6-3) in the semifinal to set up a final clash with Roger Federer, who beat Borna Coric in a tight three-setter to progress, at the Indian Wells Masters.
In the women's section, Naomi Osaka beat Simona Halep in the semifinal to set up a meeting with Daria Kasatkina in the final, the latter having beaten Venus Williams to progress.
Ankita Raina won the $25,000 ITF Women's Tennis tournament , beating France's Amandine Hesse in straight sets (6-2, 7-5) in the final.
Prajnesh Gunneswaran won the $15,000 ITF Men's Futures Tennis tournament , beating Nam Hoang Ly 6-3, 6-4.
OTHER SPORTS
Badminton: P. V. Sindhu lost 21-19, 19-21, 18-21 to Akane Yamaguchi in the semifinal of All England Open Badminton. (REPORT)
Lin Dan and Tai Tzu Ying were the Men's and Women's Singles champions at the All England Open Championships 2018. (REPORT)
Hockey: The Indian men's hockey team was drawn against arch-rival Pakistan in the opening match of men's Champions Trophy hockey tournament in Breda, Netherlands.
Sardar Singh was dropped from the Indian hockey team for CWG 2018!
Athletics: Neeraj Rathi and Karamjit Kaur failed to finish among the medals in the Asian 20km Race Walking Championships at Nomi, Japan, on Sunday, though the nation won the women’s gold and two bronze medals.
Chess:Shakhriyar Mamedyarov beat Vladimir Kramnik and joined Fabiano Caruana in the lead at four points after six rounds of FIDE Candidates Chess tournament.
