Who is Yuri Gazinsky?

Russia's Yuri Gazinsky scored the first goal of the 2018 FIFA World Cup when he found the back of the net against Saudi Arabia in the twelfth minute.

Russia's Yuri Gazinsky made history on Thursday when he scored the first goal of the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The 28-year-old rose high to score a brilliant header against Saudi Arabia in the twelfth minute. Interestingly, this is Gazinsky's first goal for his country and also his first appearance for the national side in 2018.

 

Gazinsky, hailing from the city of Komsomolsk-on-Amur, has made all of six appearances for the national team. He received his national call up in August 2015 for the UEFA Euro 2016 qualifiers against Sweden. He went on to make his debut for the team on in a friendly against Turkey on 31 August 2016.

The midfielder began his club career with FC Luch-Energiya Vladivostok, before moving to Torpedo Moscow. He enjoyed a year-long stint with Torpedo before moving to his current side Krasnodar. In his five seasons with Krasnodar, he has scored on seven occassions.

While he may not be prolific in front of goal, he delivered when it mattered the most, giving his national side the all-important lead on Thursday evening.
