“For many, batting might mean big totals of 180s or 200s. However, for me it is just about 10 to 15 runs more, which we can get with some smart adjustments,” Kane Williamson said.

Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Kane Williamson doesn't believe that batting is an area of concern, even as his bowling attack has invariably risen to the occasion in defending modest totals and script some fabulous wins so far in the IPL.

In an exclusive interview with Sportstar’ on Thursday, Williamson said that he would love to look at this differently from others. “For many, batting might mean big totals of 180s or 200s. However, for me it is just about 10 to 15 runs more, which we can get with some smart adjustments,” he said.

“The team’s progress so far has been very impressive, even as there is always scope for improvement. One of the major tasks before the season began was to adapt to the different conditions, compared to the previous editions when 180-200 totals were very consistent. That way, full credit to the team for the way it responded to each crisis so far. However, now on these surfaces, even 140-plus is defendable,” the soft-spoken Sunrisers captain said.

How difficult was it to step into David Warner’s shoes (banned from the IPL this season in the wake of the ball-tampering controversy)? “There were a few quick discussions before I was elevated as a captain, which I look at only as an added part of my role. No doubt, he has been a huge part of Sunrisers in the last few seasons, as a leader and a player. It is a loss not to have him,” he said.

“I must say we have great talent in the team and it is a thoroughly enjoyable experience to play with such good people. The team has been nice in producing the results. I am focussed on the cricket we have to play and not to think too much about captaincy,” Williamson said.

“Frankly, whether you are a captain or a batsman, you have a role to play like every member of the team and focus on that for the team’s cause. That is the beauty of Sunrisers campaign so far, as everyone is chipping in when needed,” he said.

“The team is relaxed and fresh for challenges in the next back-to-back games against Delhi and Bengaluru. As we enter the second-half of the campaign, it is important that we do the right things at the right time,” he said.

“Well, experience, very good bowling attack and fielding have been the key aspects, which are playing a major role in the team’s performances so far. Everyone is ready to show great attitude when he gets a chance,” the SRH captain said.

“I am not surprised with the success of wrist spinners on pitches which are slow and have some turn. Their quality spin is naturally having a great impact on most of the teams,” he said.

“The first target is not aiming for the playoffs, but the next game. I strongly believe that every team, despite being in the lower half of the points-table, has a chance to come back strongly,” Williamson signed off.
