The Chennai City Police on Tuesday arrested 10 members of the Tamizhaga Vaazhvurimai Katchi (TVK) when they attempted to enter M.A. Chidambaram stadium, where Chennai Super Kings, returning to the Indian Premier League (IPL) fold after two years, will face Kolkata Knight Riders on Tuesday.
This comes within a week after TVK leader, T. Velmurugan threatened to disrupt the IPL matches and ‘capture’ the IPL players. On Tuesday, party cadre who alighted from MRTS railway station, Chepauk, tried to enter into the main gate of the stadium with black flags. Police personnel prevented them from proceeding further and subsequently they were taken into custody by the city police.
Following a boycott call by several political parties and fringe groups over the Cauvery water dispute, police had a layered security cordon thrown around the ground.
Under the direct supervision of Additional Commissioner of Police M.C.Sarangan, three joint commissioners and 13 deputy police commissioners, elaborate security was provided to the venue and the hotels where the players are staying.
Over 4,000 police personnel including city police, armed reserve and elite commando groups are deployed at the two venues.
“We have taken all measures to maintain law and order and ensure the match is held in a peaceful manner. The spectators will be allowed inside the stadium only after thorough frisking,” a senior police official told The Hindu .
The security has also been beefed up at the Chennai Super Kings team hotel.
Mobile phones allowed at Chepauk
On Monday, the Chennai City Police took extra measures to prevent any untoward incidents, banning mobile phones, helmets, handbags, banners, flags, remote control car keys, musical instruments, scissors, glasses etc inside the stadium. The Chennai Super Kings management, however, released an update on social networks saying, mobile phones would be allowed inside the stadium.
