David Willey replaces Kedar Jadhav at CSK

England left-arm seamer David Willey will replace injured middle-order batsman Kedar Jadhav in the Chennai Super Kings squad for the 2018 season of the IPL.

Willey, who plays for Yorkshire, has completed his paperwork and has got a go-ahead from the Yorkshire Cricket Board. Willey will join his England teammates Sam Billings and Mark Wood in the CSK franchise.

Martyn Moxon, Yorkshire’s Director of Cricket confirmed Willey's move to CSK and said: “We find ourselves in an impossible situation with these late replacement requests. At the moment, we are potentially looking at a situation where if we deny a player an opportunity, we will be left with someone who is not completely focused on playing for Yorkshire. This would be counter-productive. There are now 12 English players in this year’s IPL, so the issue goes further than just here at Emerald Headingley (Yorkshire)."

Earlier, Liam Plunkett had moved from Yorkshire to Delhi Daredevils as a replacement for the injured Kagiso Rabada.

Willey, too, confirmed his move to the glitzy league and said,"This (the move to CSK) is going ahead."

Willey — with a base price of Rs. 2 crore — went unsold in the player auction held earlier this year.

The 28-year-old has played 20 T20s for England, claiming 24 wickets at an average of 23.95 and economy rate of 8.30. He has also played 34 ODIs picking up 36 wickets at an average of 36.11.

However, this will his maiden stint in the IPL.

Moxon also emphasised the need for a mechanism to protect the interest of the English Counties. “I will be chairing a meeting with other directors of cricket at Edgbaston to discuss the future of the game. With the number of domestic T20 contracts available worldwide, it is important that we future-proof the County Championship. I will be calling for the introduction of a cut-off date, after which players will not be allowed to go to the IPL. Hopefully this can gain national approval and be supported by the ECB.”
