The emotions were hard to miss as the Pakistan cricketers walked back to the dressing room on Sunday evening. The senior players had moist eyes, the juniors had disbelief on their faces. They were yet to come to the terms that history was scripted by beating tournament favourite India in the final of the Champions Trophy.
Families of Sarfraz, Amir jubilant about Champions Trophy win
While the players kissed the trophy and took selfies with it — only to send those pictures to the family members back home — the celebrations continued in the dressing room. The champagne was popped up, there was music, and of course, the cricketers danced to the tunes of ‘ Dil Dil Pakistan ’ to celebrate the moment.
That was, however, not all.
With loads of messages coming in from home, the players called up the near ones to show the moment. “Right after the final, Sarfraz called us up and sent a few videos to share the happiness. As a Pakistani, this is a big moment to see your country win. It is equally fascinating to see someone from your family leading the side,” Syed Aftab Ali Shah, the father-in-law of skipper Sarfraz Ahmed, told Sportstar .
While the Pakistan skipper enjoyed with his team-mates in the dressing room, he made it a point to click a few pictures of his son Abdullah and wife Khushbakht with the trophy. “It is a special moment and must be celebrated,” he told his family members. Just the other day, a photograph of former India captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni clicking photos with Abdullah went viral, and on Sunday evening, Sarfraz too ensured that the newborn too enjoys his moments. “The cricketers enjoyed themselves for long. It was a hard-fought win in the tournament and needed some celebration,” a source, who was present in the celebration, said.
As they celebrated the coveted win, the players hoped that international cricket returns to Pakistan soon. “I hope this win will boost Pakistan cricket and all the (major) playing nations will come to Pakistan,” said Sarfraz. Keeping an eye on the 2019 World Cup, the captain admitted that it was nothing less than a fairytale for his team. “Hopefully this win, everyone will remember, not just for today, not just for tomorrow, but for a very long, long time,” he said, adding: “When we arrived here (in England), we were No 8 and now we are the champions.”
Well, some dreams do come true!
