Done with UP, Piyush Chawla eyes Gujarat move

Perhaps, all good things invariably come to an end, and cricket is no exception. After taking the field in the domestic tournaments for Uttar Pradesh for seasons, seasoned spinner Piyush Chawla has now decided to move to greener pastures.
The leg-spinner, who has picked up 226 wickets in 80 games for Uttar Pradesh, has sought a No Objection Certificate (NOC) from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) to join the defending Ranji Trophy champion Gujarat.

Though there is buzz that Gujarat has already sealed the deal with the spinner, the sources maintained that it was still in process.
Despite being one of the old boys of Uttar Pradesh, Chawla played only a couple of matches for the side last year. With the rise of leg-spinner Kuldeep Yadav, Chawla’s chances were dented, and that may have forced him to take such a decision.
If the move finally works out, Chawla will not be left alone in Gujarat. The 28-year-old spinner will have pacer and state-mate R. P. Singh for company in the new side. The Gujarat side, which won the Ranji Trophy title last year, is captained by Parthiv Patel.
It is learnt that with its key spinner Axar Patel not available throughout the season, Gujarat is in need of a spinner who can not only be effective on the field, but can also guide the youngsters.
That’s where Chawla comes in. With more than 400 wickets in his kitty, the spinner knows the conditions well, and in the long season, he can be effective. But then, that’s for the future.
