The hit to the boundary that left India needing 12 runs from six balls, to win.

Dinesh Karthik was a "very, very happy" man after sensationally helping India lift the Nidahas Trophy with an eight-ball 29 not out.

Walking into bat with India needing a mammoth 34 runs off 12 balls, Karthik's remarkable shot-making ability came to the fore. And with five hits to the boundary (2x4, 3x6), Karthik won India a match that was in Bangladesh's grasp after Mustafizur Rahman had delivered a wicket-maiden (the 18th over of the innings).

Speaking to bcci.tv afterwards, Karthik was elated, attributing his success on the night and that of the team's to the hard work put in by him and the support staff over the last year.

"It's amazing, these are the things you kind of remember through your life, it remains in memories later. I am really happy, most importantly all the support staff who have put in a lot of hard work through the year, lot of credit to all of them."

Rohit Sharma: 'We knew Karthik could finish off the game'

Karthik said that walking into a situation when he needed to hit a boundary off every ball helped his cause.

"At that stage, all I needed to do was try and hit a boundary every ball, that's what I was looking to do. I was kind of positioning myself in the crease according to what I predicted he'd bowl."

An unexpectedly large crowd had turned up at the Khettarama to witness a final which didn't have the home team playing. And a majority of them were rooting for India, and understandably so, with Sri Lanka having been knocked out by Bangladesh.

Karthik was happy with the turnout and said it was a factor.

"Amazing! The fact that so many people turned up for this final, considering it was India vs Bangladesh (was great). Really happy with the support and that always helps when you bat and you're playing. A wonderful crowd!"

Not often in his now 14-year-old international career has Dinesh Karthik been the protagonist for an Indian win. Here, he walked into a crunch situation having had only one meaningful hit in the tournament prior.
