Vijender Singh’s opponent has not been finalised yet.

It’s been four months since Vijender Singh fought his last professional bout. Taking on Chinese Zulpikar Maimaitiali in August, the star Indian boxer had a rather easy victory. And now, if things fall in place, Vijender is set to end the year with another pro boxing fixture on December 23.

Even though the boxer remained tight-lipped on the development, Sportstar has reliably learnt that the match would be held at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium indoor hall in Jaipur. While there is not much clarity over the opponent, an official announcement is expected on Monday.

Only a few days back, it was announced that Vijender would face British and Commonwealth Super Middleweight champion Rocky Fielding in a title fight on March 30 next year in London. But to ensure that the Indian boxing ace finishes the year on a high, his promoters, it is learnt, are already in talks with the WBO over the fight.

‘In the pipeline’

When contacted, Neerav Tomar, the promoter of IOS Boxing Promotions, admitted that talks are on in the final stages. “We are working on the final nitty gritty’s and we are working for some WBO sanctions to come in, that’s why there is a delay in announcement,” Tomar told Sportstar on Saturday, adding: “Nothing is finalised yet on the opponent. Things are in the pipeline.”

Talking on why they chose Jaipur as the venue, Tomar made it clear that they are assessing everything. “We are evaluating everything and Jaipur could be the possible venue,” the promoter said.

During the fight in August, two of Vijender’s former team-mates Akhil Kumar and Jitender Kumar too turned pros, but unhappy with the way the promoter handled them, the two boxers parted ways in October. But now, with Vijender set to hit the ring again, Indian professional boxing will have something to look forward to.
