Defending champion Kerala (429 pts) bounced back from a sticky situation to retain the title in the Sri Krishna 32nd National junior athletics championship, at the Nehru Stadium here on Monday.

It was Kerala's 22nd title and its fifth on the trot. The host (413.5 pts), initially, looked to pull off a stunner as its athletes secured four gold medals in the morning session. B. Nithin, V. Revathi and R. Giridharani all finished on top in the 200m and even went on to complete a sweet double.

Srinidhi followed it up with a gold in the under-20 hammer to give the host a three-point edge at the halfway mark. But the post lunch session saw the Kerala athletes work that extra bit to keep the crown. Two meet records were also bettered on the final day. Haryana's Shankar edged out Asian youth champion Beant Singh for the gold and a new record in the youth boys' 800m. In the same age class, Delhi's Rajkumar stopped the clock at 6:02.69 for the record in the 2,000m steeplechase.
